Circuit design is a very critical phase of the product. It defines the product's noise figures, power consumption, reliability over the environmental conditions, cost and reproducibility. Selecting the right topology and configuration of any circuit block needs a in depth knowledge and experience of different schemes and latest technologies.
It is uncommon today for engineers to figure out right passive components for the circuits like resistors, capacitors and inductors. Each of these have several types based on construction geometry and materials made from. One type may fit into particular circuit, but will not work for different circuit for temperature co-efficients, derating parameters, thermal resistance, Q-factors, ESR, ESL, core curves and frequency response. Low noise high speed amplifier ICs are not always good for every design. Many times engineers do waste their money in selecting high performance components which are not required in the circuit. It brings extra burden of dual power supply, power supply filters and leads to higher cost. Some times it limits the operation of circuit to certain ambient conditions. It is a good practice to spend some time in simulating the circuit block with different low cost critical components with different signal band, temperature range, power supply ripples. This will bring huge savings during the life of the product. Digital circuit design invloves custom logic in either FPGA or CPLD. Designing FPGA and CPLD are very straight forward now a days with smart tools provided by manufacturers. Besides that still routing of the signals for critical timing requirements requires thorough knowledge of particular FPGA architecture and logic design. In system design consist of microprocessor, microcontroller, memories (SRAM, SDRAM, DDRx, NAND, NOR), various digital power rails, battery chargers, sensors, signal conditioning blocks, A/D converters, DSPs, embedded OS, designer has to be expert over entire range of different technologies to get most out of limited performance of embedded system. |
